Sunset on a tropical island

This was the first piece that I created with chalk pastels after ordering a pack of pastels from Amazon. The piece is done on an A4 sheet of printer paper and is based on the tropical part of the globe that you were not able to travel to due to restrictions.

The coronavirus pandemic saw a halt on all domestic and international travel as we knew it. Holidays cancelled, city breaks re-planned, and family catch-ups paused. This quick chalk pastel creation was to remember times when travel abroad was permitted and a time before the world was gripped by a pandemic.

By blending the chalk pastels to create the sunset glow in the sky with the sun setting on the horizon, more blending was done to complete the sea. The sands were simple yellow chalk that was rubbed to make it have a smooth texture.

The palm tree on the left-hand side was an interesting take on a palm tree – with it looking more like a tarragon plant than a palm tree! However, as a first attempt, I didn’t think it was too bad and you could work out what the creation was trying to show.
