The Striding Elephant
December 2020

The magnificent animal, that is the elephant, was the subject of this acrylic piece – it was the first creation made with acrylic paints.
Pastel chalk was proving to be fun and could produce some decent creations with them, but I wanted to explore further in the art world and so invested in a set of acrylic paints.

Farmer in Huncoat
March 2021

In January 2021, the UK went into a third national lockdown as a reactionary measure to the growing public health impacts of Cov-Sars-2, otherwise known as the Covid-19 pandemic.
This painting was done after the lockdown but the reference image was from a walk during the lockdown. The time in lockdown was spent at my family home in Lancashire.

Table Over The Cape
March 2021

This creation was undertaken as life in the UK was becoming somewhat normal again. We were easing out of the third national lockdown and the Prime Minister of the UK, Boris Johnson, had outlined that the so-called ‘unlocking’ of the country would happen in stages. It was a strange time, but what we know as normal life was within sight once again.

A Stormy Day in the Channel
August 2021

This creation was probably the first in the hobby that wasn’t related to, or inspired by an aspect of, the pandemic of lockdowns that were implemented for public health measures. This creation was inspired by something very different. It was inspired by shock, disgust and anger towards an issue that still remains very current.
The migrant crisis that unfolded in the English Channel and the audacious comments made by the government fueled anger across the nation. That anger and disgust were what fuelled this creation.

The Beast of the Savannah
August 2021

After creating The Striding Elephant, I thought it was time to have another go at painting an animal. The savannah, and African plains, seem to be a recurring theme with the animal creations. The savannah was yet another inspiration for this creation.
A majestic animal of the savannah, often known as the ‘King of the Jungle’ this creation was based on the African lion.

Mount Kilimanjaro
November 2021

Another landscape painting was inspired by the amazing continent of Africa. This time, still remaining in sub-Saharan Africa but moving towards the equator. The iconic Mount Kilimanjaro stands tall in Tanzania.
Mount Kilimanjaro, similar to Table Mountain and Cape Town is on the “to visit” list. Climbing Kilimanjaro is a challenge that has been undertaken and completed by many people. A unique challenge is presented through the differing climates as the mountain is ascended. Starting from dense, humid forest and grasslands moving to the ice-cold summit which houses the last remaining glaciers on the continent of Africa.

A Tropical Sunset
March 2022

It’s another acrylic paint creation that takes the form of the landscape – just this time moving away from the theme of the African Savannah!
A tropical island, somewhere in the Caribbean, like Barbados, was the inspiration for this creation. The tranquillity of the light blue, tropical sea, the golden white sands and the warm temperatures is the ideal location for a holiday.

A Path of Hope and Peace
April 2022

When the hobby of exploring art and drawing, or painting, different landscapes, subjects and objects, it was because of the lockdowns that were imposed owing to the coronavirus pandemic. More of the story behind the hobby can be found here. However, lockdowns were in reaction to a crisis and what would later be described as the greatest crisis that has faced the global in peacetime history – since the end of World War Two.
In February, Russia, under the leadership of Vladimir Putin, invaded the state of Ukraine. This creation is a dedication to Ukraine and a symbol of solidarity during a tough period for the nation.

Turbines on the Horizon
August 2022

For this creation, we went back to acrylics, and also back to the theme of landscapes. A theme that hadn’t been the focus of a creation for a while.
Summer 2022 has been busy. It has been the first summer where there have been no public health restrictions. In 2021, summer was deemed as “opening up” as the world came out of lockdowns and life was driven by social distancing whenever people left their homes. It was a summer spent getting back to what normal life was known to be. A summer that was taken easy and with some reservation. However, summer 2022 has been busier and occupying.
So, where did the landscape of turbines come from? Why choose to do a sunset landscape?

Coate Water Diving Board
August 2022

Sticking with the theme of landscapes, this creation incorporated something new for acrylic. Something that has been created with chalk pastel but not with acrylic. A landmark.
The Coate Water Diving Board is an iconic and recognisable landmark in the Wiltshire region, being associated with the town of Swindon. The diving board is a listed asset and therefore protected under planning and heritage legislation. However, recently permission had been sought to clean up the diving board and bring it back to become an asset that carries pride for the town.

Buckingham Palace
September 2022

This creation has a different inspiration from the other creations published on this site. On Thursday 8th September 2022, Buckingham Palace shared the news that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II had died peacefully at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.
TV programming was interrupted the share the news, as was radio. It was a moment that the nation knew would happen but didn’t want to witness. Following the news, in the same statement, Buckingham Palace confirmed that the next monarch King Charles III would remain at Balmoral overnight with the Queen Consort, Camilla, before travelling to London on Friday.
As a nation with a monarchy, this happening was a moment in our history, playing out as we lived through it. Something that had not happened since 1952, when Her Majesty became Queen following the death of her father, King George VI.

Belfast via Birmingham: A Bloody Travel Disaster
March 2023

It’s been a while since the last time the paints came out from their storage box. This is due to being busy and having packed weekends taken up with various things – and time flying by quicker than you can blink your eyes.
However, here we are with a partly free weekend, well, a free Sunday – and what better way to use it than to get back into the painting hobby.
Having not painted since last year, with the last piece being Buckingham Palace following the passing of the Late Queen, it’s been about 6 months since the brushes touched the paper. Having not realised it was that long since last picking up the paint brushes – the endeavour is to not let such an amount of time pass again before the next painting!

Swindon: It’s not all just roundabouts
August 2023

It seems at the moment, that time is flying by quicker than ever. The year comes and goes as quick as the months and days! This year’s summer has been no different.
This creation is a little different as it wasn’t inspired by travel or lack of, like, the Belfast creation, but this time was, inspired by a town that’s become home for the past 5 years. A town in Wiltshire that finds itself, usually, at the butt of jokes and is called upon as a negative reflection of the county.
