Sunset on a tropical island

April 2020

Sunset on a tropical island

This was the first piece that I created with chalk pastels after ordering a pack of pastels from Amazon. The piece is done on an A4 sheet of printer paper and is based on the tropical part of the globe that you were not able to travel to due to restrictions.

Bees keep the world moving

April 2020

Worker bee, keeping the world moving

This creation was done when we were about a month into the first lockdown. The lockdown that the UK public optimistically thought would only last three weeks lasted for three months.

This piece was done to mark that although the human world had come to a standstill and had been stopped in its tracks due to the coronavirus pandemic – the natural world continued to go about its ways.

South Parade Pier, Southsea

May 2020

South Parade Pier, Southsea, Portsmouth

This chalk pastel piece was completed as Clarence Esplanade was one of my favourite places to go for a walk when I lived in Portsmouth. The seafront in Portsmouth isn’t like most coastal towns and cities. Portsmouth doesn’t have the traditional b&bs and seaside attractions that you often see in places like Bognor Regis, Bournemouth, and Blackpool.

Pastel Pier

Pastel Pier

With lockdown continuing on beyond what was the initial three weeks, as initially laid out by the UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, attention moved to other past-times, including watching content from the streaming platform, Netflix.

One of the recent additions to Netflix was the great musical film, La La Land, featuring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone as the two lead actors.

George, the Tortoise

May 2020

George, the Tortoise

This creation came as we passed ‘World Turtle Day. A day which is set on 23rd May every year. As the lockdown, again, continued, artworks began to form around internationally marked days such as ‘World Turtle Day.

After seeing the promotion of World Turtle Day, it seemed that a turtle would be a nice theme for the next creation. However, once the pencil took to the paper, I’d established that the turtle that I was aiming to draw was in fact a tortoise!

Under the Sea, World Oceans Day

June 2020

Under the Sea

This creation was another themed piece around World Oceans Day, which is marked on 8th June every year.

The oceans offer a wealth of benefits to the globe from capturing and storing carbon to providing means of transport for food and goods as well as being home to the many species of animals and fish that live and thrive within the ocean.

Tower Bridge, London

November 2020

Tower Bridge, London

In November 2020, the UK experience its second national lockdown meaning that non-essential retail, leisure, and hospitality, among other things were once again, closed. This national lockdown was set to last for no longer than four weeks.

Scrolling through the social media platform, Instagram, a photo of Tower Bridge appeared on my feed – taken from a siding along the River Thames. The siding would not be accessible when the tide is in on the river.

Rocky, the Rockhopper Penguin

December 2020

Rocky the Rockhopper

This pastel drawing of a rockhopper penguin was completed in December 2020, following the end of the second national lockdown in the UK.

As we ended the second national lockdown and in the full swing of winter, I thought it was best to pass the time of a weekend afternoon by getting out the sketch pad and having a go at drawing a rockhopper penguin.

Roaming Lemur

December 2020

Roaming Lemur

This piece was created in December 2020, after the second national lockdown had eased and local restrictions, in the form of tiers, were back in place. Looking back through old photographs on my phone is always a mood boost. As the cold weekends of winter rolled in, a photo appeared in the scroll from Safari Zoo, located in Dalton-in-Furness, Cumbria, from a visit in the summer of 2019. At the zoo, the ring-tail lemur troops, as well as ruff lemurs, are free-roaming within one part of the Zoo meaning that as people walk through the lemurs are roaming around the tree canopies too.
